Vintage Teacup Candle
Vendor: Mags McGinnis
Type: Vintage Teacup Candle

Old bone-china teacups from mis-matching sets are often discarded. But not for Mags McGinnis, who has found another use for them: reclaimed, they now house her eco-friendly soy wax refillable candles. Carefully sourced in the UK, her cups can come with saucers and plates, to make the perfect table setting. Given the nature of her finds, each of the flower designs tends to be different, but that is of course part of their beauty – a glorious mismatch of pretty and ever so feminine cups, plates and saucers, twinkling in their candlelight.

The candles have been left unfragranced so they can be enjoyed with food. If you wish, once the candle has been going a short while you may (carefully!) add a few drops of your favourite essential oil or blend of oils to the molten wax around the wick (what’s known as the “burn pool”).

The candles are made from 100% EcoSoya™ wax. The raw materials that make up EcoSoya™ waxes are sourced domestically within the USA (there is no soya market in the EU) and are grown in a temperate climate from sustainable sources. No palm oil (which contributes to the destruction of tropical rainforests and wildlife habitats) or paraffin (a highly refined petrochemical product)is used.

Other benefits of soya wax:

+ Longer, cooler and cleaner burning without soot buildup

+ Biodegradable and free from pesticides and herbicides

+ Do not contain Genetically Modified Material

+ Easy to clean up with soap and warm water

Refillable candles – how does that work?

The first refill is free, thereafter £6.50 each. If you live in London, please return your teacup to Unpackaged on Amwell Street EC1 and it will be refilled with a new candle. Alternatively, you can send back your cups to The Lazy Environmentalist and we will have them refilled and posted back to you.

I have my grandma’s old tea service – can you turn it into candles ?

Of course. We can discuss any special commissions you have in mind. Contact The Lazy Environmentalist to arrange at info@lazye.co.uk. All requests can easily be accomodated, from old family sets of china converted to use for weddings and christenings, to summer solstice picnics. As soya wax washes off completely with soap and warm water the teacups may be easily returned to their original use thereafter.

Burning time: appx 25 hours

Burning Tips:
In order to ensure maximum burn quality it is important to follow these simple steps:
  • Ensure that the wick is central and upright
  • Always trim the wick to 6mm before lighting
  • Container candles should only be burned 1hr for every 2.5cm in diameter
  • Place candles away from draughts. A flickering flame indicates the presence of a draught, reduces your candle burning time, and may cause it to smoke.
  • Ensure a full melt pool has formed before extinguishing your candle. This releases the aroma of the essential oils and prevents wax build-up inside your container
  • To prevent smoke when extinguishing your candle, briefly submerge the wick in the melt pool with the tip of a knife before pulling straight up again
  • Ensure the the melt pool has solidified before you re-light your candle
  • Do not burn candle right down to the bottom of the container to prevent breakage
